Boat Movements 2010

Overall aims for 2010

There are three main aims for the boat movements away from the museum for 2010
  1. Promoting the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port within the local ‘Cheshire West and Chester’ area.
  2. Using these trips to increase training opportunities for the much larger number of people involved.  Local trips will also allow people to ‘go home’ in the evening and rejoin the boats in the morning if they do not wish to stay on board overnight.
  3. Use of WORCESTER locally to increase knowledge of the boat operation and to prove the engine further.

We will be using SHAD as the tow boat for GIFFORD for these events.  In addition by not conducting a long trip this year we will not remove a significant number of the floating exhibits for long periods of time, recognising that currently Ilkeston and Mendip are out of the public display.

Crew Requirements

Required Crewing for Gifford trips
The expectation is that for each trip there will be one person in charge who has undertaken the Helmsmans certificate and has been deemed to be suitably experienced to ‘Captain’ the trip.  As a minimum 3 crew members will be required each day, this should include a second person with significant experience and others who wish to gain more experience ideally with 4 or 5 for the locks.

 EVENT DETAILS AND ROUGH PLAN

Note the person volunteering to Captain the trip will confirm details as they become finalised – dates, stopping places and times will be determined by the person in charge.

Ellesmere Festival 10th-12th September

Locally organised by Shropshire Union Canal society.  Would be a slightly longer trip for people to undertake, BMS/NWM gains additional publicity in the north Shropshire area.
Training opportunities on this trip include wide and narrow locks with a pair of boats.

Acton Bridge Steam Rally 2nd 3rd October 2010

This trip is to support the Acton Bridge event which is getting increasingly popular with boaters in its 42nd year.  By Supporting this event gets a wider public audience and will hence increase publicity for the NWM.  It retains use of the barge lock onto the ship canal and Weston Marsh lock onto the Weaver, two navigations which have little traffic and require us to prove they are needed.  In addition should the museum wish to have a steam weekend in 2011 or 2012, then useful contacts can be made with the traction engine owners.

This trip takes 1 day of boating from the museum (approx 8 hours of boating).  Proposal is to leave on Friday 1st October and return to the museum on Monday 4th October.

Training opportunities on this trip, travelling breasted up, wide canal locks and also wide river locks and use of lines, as well as deep water boating.

NOTE a qualified VHF user and registered VHF set ideally should be present on this trip, although mobile contact is acceptable.

If you are interested in crewing for any of these trips please contact Will Manning or Mike Turpin or email crewing@boatmuseumsociety.org.uk

The Boat Museum Society works closely with National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port, management to organise and develop Museum volunteering. In particular the BMS provides training and support, and new volunteers also receive free membership of the Society.

All volunteers

  • become part of an enthusiastic community of people
  • spend time in a unique and historic, waterside setting
  • learn about fascinating histories and stories
  • work in a sociable and friendly environment
  • use their skills and knowledge in new and rewarding ways
  • hone or learn new skills.
Volunteers also receive free soup or a sandwich
in the museum's waterside café when they work a half day or a day.

We need volunteers to help out in many different ways

Gifford and Worcester rotas

Currently we have a one day in every four week rota. With a few extra hands we could move to a one in every six week rota. Duties include general checking of the boats, lighting a fire to keep Gifford aired, removing water from the bilges and general ‘TLC’ Work could be on any day in the week but is currently carried out on Sundays.
